For most of the time that I have been involved with CADMEF as a trustee, I have also been a full-time professor of marketing. I teach advertising, direct marketing, e-commerce marketing, and other related classes at one of the Michigan public universities – Ferris State.
Some practitioners may think that college professors live a cushy life. “She teaches just 12 hours a week! What does she do with the rest of her time?” But doing this job well can get pretty intense. There’s developing and improving classes, advising and mentoring students, doing service work for one’s school and community, and of course, research, writing, and other scholarly activity.
At certain times of the year I often feel as if my “tank is dry” – I’ve been teaching, mentoring, serving and sharing so much that there’s just nothing much new to give. That’s where CADMEF comes in, providing opportunities for me to fill up that tank with stimulating new ideas, new applications, research ideas, and lots of networking with peers.
Every May, CADMEF sponsors an IMC Roundtable that allows professors to share and discuss their research, interact with peers, and enjoy cutting-edge presentations from hand-picked practitioners. Profs from all over the Midwest gather in Chicago for this two-day event, which is offered to them free of charge, thanks to generous donations from CADMEF donors.
Each October, CADMEF co-sponsors the Jacobs & Clevenger Case Writers’ Workshop in cooperation with the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation. This half-day event brings together professors from all over the world at the Direct Marketing Association fall convention. The Case Writers’ Workshop combines presentations of winning cases with introductions to new case subjects from impressive companies – last fall’s presenters included representatives from Zappo’s and IBM, for example.
Each winter, students from schools in Chicago and surrounding states are invited to CADMEF’s Okner Symposium – a chance for them to learn from practitioners and gain insights into the job market. And CADMEF provides scholarships that students may apply for and win – a tremendous opportunity during these tight financial times.
As you can tell, I’m a big fan of CADMEF – and to help keep it producing these fantastic events, I invest a good deal of volunteer time and effort. Thanks, CADMEF...I appreciate you, your trustees, your donors, and your mission!
